Join the walking festival and help the Doncaster
Group of the Ramblers celebrate the official launch of the
The Heron
Way is a series of linear walks, linking the park and ride facility at
Rossington with the park and ride facility at Castle Hills, passing through
pleasant countryside and linking nature reserves, country parks, tourist sites
and the best viewpoints, mainly in the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough. The total distance of the

Our festival has walks
for everyone, from short strolls for the occasional walker to longer hikes for
those more capable and a little fitter. Even better still, all our walks are
near good bus routes so walk as much or as little as you want.
Short walk 1: Celebration Walk (5.5 miles)
Join us for the opening
event at Don Valley Outdoor Centre, Old Rossington. We start the walks
festival with an invitation to join us at the opening ceremony. Have a piece of
our special cake with a tea or coffee then get your boots on for a linear walk
to Wadworth.
The walk will be led by a special guest, with a free buffet at the Fox and
Hounds, Wadworth.
There is the option of a
return walk at

Long walk 1: Rossington
or Wadworth to Conisbrough (16+ or 11+ miles)
This longer walk starts

Short walk 2: Wadworth – Medieval
Parks (7.5 miles)
We start the second of
our series of shorter walks from Wadworth. This lovely walk takes us through Wadworth woods, past a
Norman church and through Conisbrough Parks with views of
Hooton Roberts with its manor house pub and fine church.

13th June
Long walk 2: Conisbrough to
Castle Hills (13+ miles)
This is the second of
the longer walks, suitable for the more energetic walker who want a challenge and
to finish the Heron Way
after completing the
first long hike on the 6th June.
This 13 ¼ mile walk
starts from Conisbrough Railway
Station and follows the TPT to
Denaby Ings nature reserve, with an exhilarating climb to
High Melton. The views
increase as we head along Barnburgh Cliff to the historic

Short walk 3: Hooton
Roberts – Castle of the Don (6+ miles)
The third short walk of
the series starts from Hooton Roberts taking us through rolling countryside with good views towards
Wentworth before descending to Old Denaby. A good climb through woodland brings
the walk through Conisbrough Crags with excellent view over the Dearne flood
plain and the Don Gorge. We now follow the Trans Pennine Trail with good views
of the castle, before our climb to finish at High Melton.

parish church.

– Ancient
Villages (6 miles)
We start our fourth short
linear walk of the series from High Melton.
This excellent walk
takes the walker along wooded limestone crags with great views over the

The
Please follow the advice
and instructions of the walks leader.
Whilst no
specialist equipment is necessary for any part of these walks they may include
occasional rough walking and a few climbs. Some paths may be wet and muddy. The
wearing of stout shoes or boots is therefore recommended.
Also
consider carrying a waterproof coat in case of rain, plenty to drink,
particularly on hot days, and a light lunch and snacks.
