Walking in and around Sheffield

Sheffield Group of the Ramblers Association

The Ramblers Association exists to further the enjoyment and discovery that walking outdoors can bring to everyone, and to promote respect for the life of the countryside. We encourage walking; protect rights of way; defend the beauty of the countryside and have campaigned for many years for freedom to roam over uncultivated, open country.

Walks changes
The walks planned for Wednesday May 7th and Wednesday May 14th are being swapped. This means that the walk on May 7th will be start at the Anchor Inn and finish at Bakewell. The walk on May 14th will start at Pictor Hall and finish at Tideswell.

As the two walks were using the same bus (the 65 at 0925) there are no changes to the bus times.

Also the walk on Wednesday July 2nd is a circular walk starting from Tideswell at 1025, and also finishing there.

Full and up-to-date details of the walks are in the online walks programme. Follow the link to the left.

WALK Sheffield
This year’s Sheffield Walking Festival will provide 10 days of walking to explore Sheffield. It runs from 30th May to the 8th June. To find out more about it and to see the programme of walks, download the programme from www.thepeoplesmovement.co.uk or telephone 0114 273 4266 for a hard copy.

Closure of Moors - Moscar Estate Access Restrictions 2008
The Moscar Estate is exercising its right to restrict access under section 22 of the CRoW Act 2000 again in spring 2008.  This is to try to minimise disturbance to the ground-nesting birds during the most critical time.

Access will be restricted between 15 May and 13 June inclusive, with the exception of 26 May (Spring Bank Holiday) and 1, 7 and 8 June.

Notices with maps will be displayed at all access points. This applies to the Open Access Land of Moscar Moor, Bamford Moor and Strines Moor. The restriction does not apply to Public Rights of Way, nor the popular concession paths on Stanage Edge and Derwent Edge.

For more information about this restriction telephone the Open Access Contact Centre 0845 100 3298.

Difficulties with ‘Family Freedom’ bus tickets in the Derbyshire Peak District
We understand that some members have been unable to buy ‘Family Freedom’ or ‘Hope Valley Family Freedom’  bus tickets from bus drivers who did not know how to issue them.

If this happens to you, please tell the driver that he or she can find the ticket from the Day menu by scrolling +/- and record as Derbys- Family Freedom.

‘Walking with the Ramblers’ walks leaflets
We have recently produced a set of high quality leaflets for people wanting to explore the area round Sheffield – perhaps for the first time. Each walk was chosen by one of our members as one of their favourites, with special points of interest.

The leaflets can be downloaded from this site – just click on the walk below. The walks are:
1. Deepcar circular 7 miles
2. Mayfield and Porter Valleys 4 miles
3. ‘Iron Age to Steel Age’ 3 miles
4. Herdings circular 4 miles
5. Lodge Moor circular 8 miles
6. Moscar Moor 5 miles – suitable only for experienced walkers

You need Adobe Reader on your computer to open these pdf files. If you haven’t got it on your computer already, download it free from here .

New to walking with us?
We have a wide and varied programme of walks – from a couple of hours at a gentle pace up to 12-15 miles. Most weeks we have 3-4 walks. To see the full programme, click on the walks programme links on the left hand side of this page.

Our short ‘Walking Out in Sheffield’ walks programme is designed for people new to walking or coming back to it after a break, or people who would just like a shorter walk. Each walk is about two or three hours at a gentle pace. There is a walk on the first Saturday of each month, and the third Thursday. For more info, click here or ring Bill McGuinness on 01226 283598.

Each month we also have a Themed Short Walk of about 5 miles or so at an easy pace. Besides enjoying the walking, these are an opportunity to learn a bit about local history and the landscape. These are on Sundays. See the Walks Programme for more information – links on the left. The Themed Short Walks are in a separate section.

You will be made very welcome on any of our walks, including the longer ones. Find out more about us, where to meet and what you need, by clicking on the link.

Getting on to the new access land – the Eastern Moors of the Peak District National Park
We now have access to vast areas of open countryside and moors. This is an exciting opportunity for all of us. Access areas are marked on the new 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey maps, but the maps don’t show where there are ways of getting onto and off the access land.

Sheffield Group has identified access points, by which we mean a stile, gate or field gate (which could be locked and should only be used as a last resort). (You may enter and leave access land at any point but must take care not to damage walls or fences.) To see the list, click here. NEW Thanks to Les Seaman, who has now added points on Ramsley Moor and Leash Fen.

Sheffield Visually Impaired Walking Group
If you or anyone you know is visually impaired and likes walking, do you know about the Sheffield Visually Impaired Walking Group? The Group has two rambles each month, usually on the second Wednesday and the fourth Sunday. Walks are about 6 or 7 miles. For more information please see their website.
Click here . Or contact Betsy Wilson on 0114 234 1271 or Ken Bower on 0114 281 5510.

Many of the guides and leaders are from the Ramblers. If you are fully sighted and would like to help in this way, please ring Betsy or Ken.
